Academic Support

TEMBO supports girls’ education beyond basic supplies since 2010

For many adolescent girls, staying in school takes much more than a uniform and school supplies. It takes support, confidence, and opportunity.

Since 2010, TEMBO has been providing financial support for breaking barriers to education through life-changing academic programs and mentorship for girls, giving them the tools to succeed in school and beyond.

Each year during the long school break in June, our partner – TEMBO Tanzania – welcomes students to a three-week English and academic enrichment program.

What began in 2010 with just 33 girls has grown into an annual program supporting more than 130 students, 65% of whom stay at TEMBO Tanzania’s Girls’ Hostel during the camp.

Through focused instruction in subjects such as biology, geography, and math — alongside English language development and study skills — students strengthen both academic performance and self-confidence.

Through teamwork, mentorship, and learning, the girls gain not only stronger academic abilities but also greater self-confidence, essential life skills, and healthy habits that last a lifetime.

The transition from primary to secondary school is one of the most vulnerable moments in a girl’s education.

TEMBO Tanzania’s 10-week PASS program supports girls ages 12 to 15 during this critical period, helping them prepare academically and emotionally for secondary school. Led by local Tanzanian teachers, the program focuses on math, science, English, and literacy.

From supporting 42 girls in six primary schools in 2013 to 48 girls across 15 schools in 2025, PASS continues to help girls move forward with confidence.

Education is more than academics; it’s about believing in yourself and knowing your worth.

TEMBO Tanzania’s mentorship program ensures that each girl is supported at every stage of her journey before, during, and after school.

Led by our dedicated mentors, Mary (Community Facilitator) and Christina (Program Support Officer), both educated Maasai women, the sessions focus on health, hygiene, education, and ending female genital mutilation. Their lived experiences and leadership make every lesson real, relatable, and deeply transformative.

Through the Girl Care Program, mentors also help ensure girls have access to clothing, toiletries, and safe housing when needed.
