Our Story

What's TEMBO?

TEMBO (Tanzania Education and Micro-Business Opportunity) is a registered Canadian charity on a mission to help transform lives in Longido District, Tanzania.

We financially support our local partners to break down barriers and create real, lasting change — giving girls access to education, equipping women with tools to build businesses, and opening doors to economic opportunity.

Together, we’re helping to build futures where every girl can go to school, every woman can support her family, and both have a fair chance to thrive.

Why Longido?

Northern Tanzania is a region of extraordinary beauty, resilience, and culture. It is also a place where many families face significant barriers to opportunity.

Tanzania ranks near the bottom in global human development (128th of 157 countries in the World Bank’s 2018 Human Capital Project), and poverty is most severe in remote districts like Longido. Limited access to secondary education, long travel distances to schools, and economic hardship place girls and women at particular risk.

In Tanzania, secondary education is free. In Longido, many families cannot afford the additional costs associated with schooling. As a result, girls are often married as young as 13, ending their education before it has truly begun. Women frequently have few opportunities to generate income, making it difficult to support their families or invest in their children’s futures.

These challenges are real — but they do not define the community.
