Uhuru Academy

2025

My name is Yusuph Kalenga, and I am the founder of Uhuru Academy — a place where sport, education, and hope come together. Our academy is based in Calgary, Canada, yet its spirit and inspiration come from Tanzania, the land that shaped my earliest dreams.

Partnering with TEMBO feels like a divine step toward that goal. TEMBO’s mission to support women and girls in Tanzania aligns beautifully with the heart of Uhuru Academy. Together, we can build bridges of opportunity and create lasting change — one child, one woman, one soul at a time. It is an honor to walk beside TEMBO on this journey. With faith, compassion, and courage, I believe we can help transform lives and inspire freedom through hope, education, and love.

From Rhythm to Impact!

Join Ken Holman for an intimate acoustic performance focused on the storytelling tradition of classic singer-songwriters. He performs solo acoustic music drawn from the golden era of popular song: the 1950s through the 1980s. Ken can be found at local porch fests in the Ottawa area and in local restaurant venues.

Ken Holman’s concerts support education in Longido, Tanzania. Be a changemaker and join Ken in his work with TEMBO – Tanzania Education and Micro-Business Opportunity, https://projectembo.org, a registered Canadian charity. All donations return
a qualified donation receipt for Canadian tax purposes.

TEMBO is very grateful for Ken’s contribution to the Longido community where he volunteers with the Longido District Learning Centre for six weeks in the fall.

Glebe Collegiate

2024-2025

In fall 2024, Glebe Collegiate in Ottawa approached TEMBO to create a partnership with their SHSM (Specialist High Schools Major)(Non-Profit). Since then, the SHSM students at Glebe Collegiate have worked with TEMBO to enhance their global understanding and to raise funds to sponsor Longido girls to go to high school.

The Glebe students have built awareness campaigns to share their knowledge with their classmates. They have held bake sales, sales of Christmas gifts and ornaments, and organized coffee house music nights to raise money to support girls half a world away. So far, over two years, they have raised over $2400.
TEMBO looks forward to continuing the partnership with the Glebe Collegiate SHSM as we work together to address the challenges of educational equity in the developing world.

Algoma U and the TEMBO 500

March 2024

On March 22nd, staff and students including the women’s soccer team at Algoma University (Sault Ste. Marie Ontario) hosted a TEMBO 500 Challenge. Together, they cycled 500 km on stationary bicycles at the university in support of women and girls in northern Tanzania. This one-day event raised more than $1,650 for girls’ academic support programs offered by TEMBO in Longido, Tanzania.

Climbing Kilimanjaro

January 2024

In January 2024 Emma Oremus embarked on an adventure she had dreamed of for a long, long time: climbing Africa’s tallest heights of Mount Kilimanjaro!

Thanks to Emma’s dream, her sense of adventure and hard work, she raised more than CAD $1,250 for the women and girls in Longido, District.

Before the climb: “Hiking has always been a source of empowerment and connection to the world around me, and I know that this giant journey will bring more of that into my life than I can even imagine. As a visitor to Tanzania’s land, I feel a responsibility to give back to the women and girls who call this region home. In conjunction with my trek, I am raising money and awareness for Project TEMBO, a nonprofit that provides sponsorship for girls’ educational opportunities and micro-business opportunities for women living in Longido District, which gazes upon Kilimanjaro’s beauty each day.“

After the climb: “Tanzania and Kilimanjaro were absolutely amazing- so impactful and beautiful- and the journey up was breathtaking (literally and figuratively). I am hopeful to visit this part of the world again someday. We reached the summit!!! Uhuru peak was an absolute dream come true and to see a bit of the world from so high up was like nothing else.”

Out of the Woods

Like most golfers, Stewart McKechnie realized that he had far too many golf balls gathering dust in his garage. The solution?

He hatched a plan to sell the golf balls and donate the proceeds to TEMBO.

He regularly canvasses his golf buddies who give him all their unwanted balls. Then he washes and sorts the balls, packaging them in egg containers. By advertising his reasonably priced used balls on Kijiji, he has successfully raised hundreds of dollars each year to support TEMBO’s programs.
