SARA and JUMA Classes
Empowering Young Minds
For many students, the path to education is not easy. Sara’s story is one of courage and determination — when her family doubted the value of girls’ education, she found strength through her friends and the lessons she learned at school.
The SARA and JUMA Program, one of the programs our funds support, adapted from the Sara Communication Initiative for sub-Saharan Africa, brings essential life skills to adolescents in Longido.
Led by TEMBO Tanzania’s Community Facilitators, weekly sessions in local primary schools cover topics such as:
- Puberty, health, and hygiene
- The importance of education
- HIV/AIDS awareness
- Gender equality and ending female genital mutilation
Through music, dance, and drama, students engage with these topics in ways that are relevant to their lives, helping them build self-esteem and make informed choices.
Adult Literacy
Learning Beneath the Acacia Tree
Each week, 15–20 women gather in one of four remote Maasai villages — often beneath the shade of an acacia tree — to learn to read, write, and build practical life skills.
For many participants, these classes mark their first experience with formal learning. Taught in Swahili, lessons combine literacy with topics such as maternal health, nutrition, and the value of girls’ education. Interactive teaching methods create an environment that is welcoming, inclusive, and empowering.
After three years, each group celebrates the progress with a colourful graduation ceremony. Graduates proudly share how they can now write their names, count in Swahili, and communicate confidently with health professionals.
Tailoring Program
Sewing Skills for a Sustainable Future
At the Longido Learning Centre, instructor Grace dreams of empowering women to produce all of the school uniforms for TEMBO-supported students.
Launched in 2018, the tailoring program has already trained 60 Maasai women from remote villages to operate sewing machines and produce school uniforms and garments.
Classes run three afternoons a week, offering a pathway toward income generation, confidence, and self-reliance.
Education creates ripples of change that extend across generations.
Help TEMBO continue its mission to empower learners of all ages.
